Three-time Grade 1 winner Turbulent Descent won her four-year-old debut Sunday in a tough edition of the $72,570 Desert Stormer Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park.

She wore down pacesetter Izzy Rules in the final sixteenth for a 1 ¼-length win under David Flores.

Sent off as the 1.50-to-1 favorite, the Congrats filly overcame a rough start to patiently stalk in fourth behind Izzy Rules through an opening quarter-mile in :21.92. Turbulent Descent began to move closer to the leader in the turn, but Izzy Rules responded when challenged. Turbulent Descent outgamed Izzy Rules in the late stages to pull away, covering six furlongs in 1:09.25 on Hollywood’s Cushion Track.

“She’s been working very, very well. The race came up perfect for us,” Flores said. “I was comfortable the whole way…. She showed what she’s made of today.”

Izzy Rules finished 4 ½ lengths ahead of Mildly Offensive, who edged Grade 1 winner Switch for third by a nose.

Trained by Mike Puype, Turbulent Descent won the Hollywood Starlet Stakes (G1) to close out her juvenile campaign in 2010 and then scored victories in the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) and the Test Stakes (G1) as a three-year-old along with the Beaumont Stakes (G2). She concluded 2011 with unplaced finishes in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) and the La Brea Stakes (G1) before taking an extended break
